The Gift of Grief
Author Unknown

"Death takes away. That's all there is to it
But grief gives back.
By experiencing it, we are not simply eroded by pain.
Rather, we become more compassionate, more aware,
more able to help others, more able to help outselves.

Grief is powerful. It plunges us into the
depths of sorrow and forces us to face the finiteness of life, the mightiness of death, and the meaning of our existence here on earth.

It does more than enable us to change: it demands it.
The way we change is up to us.
It is possible to be forever bowed by grief.
It is possible to be so afraid of one aspect of it that we become frozen in place, stuck in sorrow, riveted in resentment or remorse, unable to move on.

But it is also possible to be enlarged, to find new direction, and to allow the memory of the beloved person who has died to live on within us...not as a monument to misery but as a source of strength, love and inspiration.

By acting on our grief, we can eventually find within ourselves a place of peace and puposefulness.
It is my belief that all grievers, no matter how intense their pain, no matter how rough the terrain across which they travel, can eventually find that place within their hearts."

Poem borrowered
with understanding.

Romeo, you have a new friend at your
Birthday party this year.
Share some birthday cake
with Colin.
Show him how birthdays
celebrated in Heaven are "celebrated"
God bless the both of you boys.

"If Only I Had Known"

IF ONLY I HAD KNOWN that day, that this was the last time I'd ever see you, I would have visited longer. I never would have left you. If only I had known that the last kiss I gave you was to be my final kiss, I would have covered your tiny little face with tons of mushy kisses. If only I had known that I was to never hold you again Romeo, I would have clutched you to my heart and held you for an eternity. If only I had known that day that it was the last song I'd ever sing to you, I would have sung you a hundred more lullabys. If only I had known that day was to be our last day together, I would have put you in your carseat and took you for an endless ride in Aunti's Pauline's big blue van. I would have played all your favorite music. I would have taken you to Toys R' Us and we could have played with all the toys for hours on end. I would have pushed you around, up and down the aisles on a tricycle until you got tired. Then I would have taken you to McDonald's and we would have shared in a happy meal. I would have ordered you an extra order of fries,,,, "you love salty fries eh sweetie". I would have driven us down to the Beach so you could feel the sand run in between your tiny little toes as we sat and played. I would have built you the biggest and best sandcastle, ever. I would have carried you into the water, letting the waves splash up against our faces. We'd giggle till we were pooped.

If only I had known that day that you were "an angel in waiting" Romeo. I would have driven you to a beautiful horse ranch out in the Country. I would have asked if I could take you horseback riding. I know the Farmer would have said yes, all he would have had to do was take one look at you and he would say, " I'd give that little boy the world if he were mine". Aunti Pauline would place you in the front of her in your baby sling backpack and off we'd go, just you and me Romeo. I'd take you through the woods, up and down the hills we'd go, you would be so captivated by all the sights and sounds of nature at its best. Your eyes would say it all. Once we returned the horse back to the stable we'd thank the Farmer and be on our way to continue on our little journey, just you and me,, Aunti Pauline and Romeo.

If only I had known that at the end of this day, it was to be our final and last day together, I would have driven us to a Movie. With your big bright blue eyes you'd say " what's playing Aunti Pauline" and I'd tell you that it was a secret, but first we'd get in line and buy popcorn with tons of butter and extra salt, we'd buy licorice and smarties too,, oh, we can't forget the pop. Without anyone seeing us, I'd sneak pop into your baby bottle,, Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh, heheheheh. I'd so proudly carry you into the Theater and we'd pick the very back row. We sit down and wait for the surprise movie to begin. Your a very big boy, so you would have your own seat, but I would have to prop you up on my purse. I'd slide a kernnel of popcorn across your little tongue and you excitedly lick the butter and salt off of your lips. I'd give you a couple sips of pop from your bottle,,, its dark, so no one can see us and we both giggle out loud. The big silver screen lights up but not as bright as your eyes do and the movie comes alive with none other but "SpongeBob Squarepants". I sing a-long to the opening trademark song and I look at you as your swaying back and forth in total excitement. I stare at you when your not looking and I say, "If only I had known".

I pick you up and place you on my knees and whisper to you in your ear that we are about to have loads of fun. I hand you a kernnel of popcorn and I pull your arm back and without anyone watching, we toss it threw the air, two rows down as we watch it hit a man in the head. He turns to see who did it, but you and I look straight ahead at the movie, giggling under our breath. We try not to laugh out loud. With those eyes of yours, I know your saying, "more Aunti Pauline, more", we're having a blast, just you and me Romeo. Once the movie has ended, I carry you out to my van and once again place you in your carseat. Its now getting very late but Mommy and Daddy know that your in very safe, loving hands, so they do not worry. I can see that your just about beyond exhausted from our big adventure day. I drive us down to the Riverfront and I once again place you on my chest in your baby sling backpack and we walk along the waterfront. I sing to you one last time a very special lullabye. " Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong, they are weak but he is strong". "Yes, Jesus loves me, yes, Jesus loves me. yes , Jesus loves me, for the Bible tells me so. "Jesus, loves me, loves me still,'tho I'm very weak and ill"...... and at that point in the song, you stretch out your arm up to my face and take your tiny little hand and touch my lips. I stop singing and I wrap both of my arms around your whole body and give you a gentle squeeze and I tell you just how deeply you have reached into my heart and the hearts of everyone who knew you.

You point up at the sky and I look up only to be greeted by thousands of bright shinning stars. I tell you that that is where Jesus lives and that someday that will be your new home, safe from all your bo bo's. No more needles, no more tubes, no more Hospitals, no more pain. You give me the biggest, brightest smile and just for a moment you spoke the words out loud " I had a fun day with you my Aunti Pauline and I love you too, very much". I look down at you as I watch you peacefully drift off to sleep in my arms and I say " sleep tight dear heart, dream of the angels".
IF ONLY I HAD KNOWN!!!!!!!!!!

I miss you so so very much Romeo Pray for all of us left down here without you, its hard but we all know your pain free and at peace keeping a constant watch over all of us.

Yours in heart, Your crazy Aunti Pauline (quack, quack, quack ) XORXORXORXORXORXORXORXORXORXOR

In a quiet country cemetery,
Where the gentle breezes blow,
Lies my nephew I love so dearly;
He died a year and a bit ago.

His resting place I visit,
Placing french fries there with care,
But no one knows my heartache,
When I turn to leave them there.

Though his smile is gone forever,
And his hands I cannot touch,
Still I have so many memories
Of the nephew I loved so much.

His memory is my keepsake,
With which I will never part.
God has him in His keeping;
I have him in my heart.
